What is Epigenetics?

The Science of Epigenetics is the study of how DNA dynamically interacts with the environment and the driving force behind how our DNA activates and expresses.

Epigenetics assists us to understand the way in which our environmental cues impact not only our genes but also the genes of our prospective descendants. This powerful science validates that it is no longer a question about nature vs nurture, rather it is the dynamic interaction between the two that creates the outcome. With epigenetics, we can take the reins to strategically influence optimal gene expression through healthy lifestyle choices to make genetic predispositions virtually irrelevant as we adapt and thrive under modern environmental pressures.

More About My Process

During your Epigenetic session, we will look at specific genes related to nutrition, sleep, supplementation, exercise, hormones, detox, and stress. As a result you will know what foods are best for you, how many hours you should sleep, what type of supplements you need more of or not at all (vitamin E for some people can be harmful in high doses), what type of exercise will give you the most benefit and not create more inflammation, how to best detox and not let hormones recycle in the body to become toxic, and how your body handles stress to make you more resilient.

Some genetic interpretation sites only look at one gene in isolation and not how they all work together. The most common gene or SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) that has had lots of publicity is called MTHFR, which stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. It is responsible for chemical reactions in the body involving B9 or folate. It also converts the amino acid homocysteine into the amino acid methionine. People that do not utilize this gene can have difficulty getting pregnant, are usually at greater risk of heart disease, higher levels of inflammation, and impaired detox pathways. It has a big role to play in the body, but you cannot just look at this SNP to determine if you will have the issues listed. It depends on how your liver detoxes, how you methylate (add a methyl group onto proteins), and how your body utilizes other vitamins in symphony.

As an example, people with a certain SNP of the MTHFR gene can have trouble with anxiety, sleep issues, or detoxifying alcohol or other toxins. Again, other genes have to be considered before I can determine whether or not someone should ever drink alcohol again. Check out the blog post on this subject for more information.

The most awesome thing about learning your unique genetic code is the epigenetic part. Just because you have a specific gene SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) does not mean it is turned on.  During your session, I will ask specific questions related to your intake form so we can determine whether it is turned on or off. You are not just your genes but how you express them.

Our Epigenetic counseling session to discuss your unique epigenetic interpretation consists of explaining in detail the 700+ genes that are used to gather the information. You will also get a copy of my template that I use to group genes together before our conversation. This gives you the time to look over it and see what questions you may have. I recommend writing them down to I make sure each of your questions are addressed. If questions arise after the session, you are welcome to schedule another time to go over those.

How Does Remote Coaching Work?

Coaching sessions run from 45 to 60 mins and can be held over the Phone, via Skype or even Face to Face in my office if you are located within the North East Tennessee area.
